SALVATION ARMY COMMUNITY APPRECIATION BREAKFAST

by Zachary DeLong

BARRE- The Business and Leadership Studies program was invited to the Salvation Army’s first Community Appreciation Breakfast at the Barre Elk’s Club by our Program Advisory member Captain Travis DeLong and his wife Capt. Kim DeLong. The breakfast was on Wednesday, October 19.

When we attended we met many local leaders as well as a few dignitaries. Those dignitaries included Gov. Jim Douglas, Lt. Gov Phil Scott, and Barre City Mayor Thom Lauzon. Also in attendance was the Salvation Army’s Divisional Leader, Major James LaBossiere. Gov. Douglas was the keynote speaker and spoke about “Vermonters helping Vermonters”. Many in attendance either volunteered for the Army or had made sizable donations at a recent point in time.

Lauzon described businesspeople in today’s economy and how business fits in with the community. Lauzon told us his plan to revamp downtown Barre to make it more attractive for tourists and other visitors.

After the breakfast, we decided to take a walk downtown to see how the Mayor’s plan was coming along. We made a few stops along the way. Our first stop was to the BTC Bake Shop next to Espresso Bueno. We learned what they do and how they conduct their classes and business. Afterward, we met Chris Conti from Ellie and Shirl’s Simply Delicious. We talked about Vermont-made products and how to sell homemade items. She was very supportive of our program.

We had a great day and learned quite a bit about business events and how business works. We are currently writing thank you notes and look forward to doing it again sometime.
